SHAPE Values: Empathy
Rounding out this series on my core values, let’s talk about empathy. It’s a word that gets used a lot, but it’s honestly the foundation for so much of what matters in sport, leadership, and life.
Empathy is the glue that holds teams, relationships, and frankly, most of life together. It’s not just about being “nice”-it’s about actually tuning in to what someone else is feeling, and letting them know you get it. In sport and performance, empathy helps teams communicate better, resolve conflict, and build a sense of safety. It’s also the foundation of good leadership.
Empathy isn’t just about listening to others-it’s also about being willing to share something of yourself. In sessions, I sometimes use mutual sharing exercises: I’ll share a story or experience, and invite you to do the same. This kind of personal disclosure builds trust and helps us both see things from each other’s perspective. It’s a reminder that empathy is a two-way street, and that we’re in this together.
I try to bring empathy into every session-whether that’s listening without judgement, helping you see things from a teammate’s perspective, or encouraging you to be kinder to yourself. We’ll practice it together, because it’s a skill like any other. And honestly, it makes the whole process a lot more human.
If you want to develop more empathy-for yourself, your team, or in your leadership-let’s connect and explore how it can support your growth and performance.
